Can MailWasher open OE automatically?

Hi all,

This morning when I first started my PC I opened MW first, checked the
messages, deleted the spams and odd E-grams, then minimized the
screen. I then went on the Internet to check the MW ng for any
replies to a question. While I was typing a reply my OE suddenly
opened up all by itself. It didn't download anything, it just opened.
I had not opened it yet, nor do I ever use the button in MW to go to
OE.

I have been trying to figure out how the peach fuzz OE was opened all
by itself. MW was the only thing other than IE open at the time. Is
it possible for MW to activate or open OE on it's own? Has anyone
else had this type of thing happen? It is just so strange, and I'm
totally at a loss where to start troubleshooting this one. I have no
idea where to even look.

I have updated and run everything (SpyBot, AdAware, AVG, Housecalls,
etc.) and nothing haunting or lurking was found. If anyone here has
any suggestions or ideas of what might be casuing this, I would really
appreciate it.

Best regards
Jan :)

Yes, MW can start OE and it can start Outlook on the machine too. In
fact, that's my setup. All short-cut's have been removed from my machines
for Outlook and OE and replaced with MW short-cuts. Even when I login, MW
is in the start-up folder and starts first. If any emails are left when I
press the Process button, Outlook is started by MW and then I use the
Send/Recv button. BTW, Outlook sends me to OE to get to the NG(s).

It's solid protection and control of the emails that reach my machines on
the network.

Yes, usually that occurs when 1) under tools\options\general "launch email
application after process" is checked and 2) the email application specified
is OE.
If OE is not the specified application, maybe something else caused that.
Not every annoyance associated with M/S applications is associated with
malware ;).
I'm sure if you search, you'll find the answer.

Really?? 'k...this is good.....as at least now I know that I don't have
something somewhere that's doing something that it shouldn't. Whew!

But, since I'm still learning how to set things up, I don't want it to
decide for me which of the e-mails I get that are not already on the
Blackhat list to delete up front. I have found many that MW has determined
should be deleted, and the check mark is in the that box, when actually, it
is an ok message. Like...my work e-mail address when I send e-mails to me
at home from work. If I have it set to auto-delete all the messages that
have the delete checked, then these would have been deleted before I could
see what was going on and make the necessary adjustment and add the addy to
my good-guys list.

Yes...I can see how this would be very helpful. I would like to be able to
just auto delete the ones that I have entered in the Blackhats list. Then
all I'd have to deal with are the Whitehats, or the ones that are perhaps
the 'iffy's'.

I'm still learning...but, I'll get it soon...<g>

Thank you very much for you time and help, I really appreciate it.

Once I set an email address in the Friends list, they are not placed in the
Black mark list ready for deletion.

It auto-launches when you have mail to process that isn't marked for
deletion or blacklisted, provided that option is checked.

In MW Tools/Options/General there is probably a tick mark in the box
beside "Launch e-mail application after processing." If you click
"Specify" you will probably find OE listed as the e-mail program to be
launched.

Yeah..this is what is happening alright, the ones that I have already added
to my Friends list are ok...but, there are some new e-mails that I get now
and then, that are not ones that I have already added to the Friends list,
and may want to, so, I don't want MW to just delete anything it does not
understand until I have a chance to review the message to be sure if I want
to add it the to the Friends, or the Blacklist. See, in my work, I get a
lot of 'word of mouth' references, which can be people I have never had
messages from before, thus, would not be in my Friends list yet. So, I want
to be able to make the decision if these new messages are Friend or Foe.
But, the ones on the Blacklist could be automatically deleted when they are
filtered and recognized by MW.

I need to maintain some control over certain types of incoming mail....see?
Is this possible?

Thank you,
Jan :)

Yes...I found this 'lil court jester...and I think I have disarmed it...so,
I am in hopes that now OE won't do anything until *I* want it to. Hopefully,
this will give me more control over the processes...surprises...startles of
the gulping kind..<g>

The launch auto-pilot system has been engaged and neutralized. The
designated sector will be confined and monitored for any further subject
activity.

Thank you very much for the additional information....I really appreciate
your time and input on this problem.

Don't set MWP to automatically delete anything!
If you see something that got hit on that turned out to be from a
friend, mark them for your whitelist, and it will supersede the
blacklist or filters list.
Also, tell your friends not to use HTML, Incrudimail, or any of those
other gnubie gnovelties <g>

'k.....thanks for the additional info...I have already told my friends and
family about the HTML thingie, I was put on to that one my first time here.
<G> I don't think any of them use that other junk, but, I'll pass it around
anyway.

Hello,

I have never gotten into the email filtering features of MW. But from what
I have seen of that feature, it seems to be like Outlook or OE. So it
should not be that hard to set the rules.

You should check out the DNS Black List Servers feature. By putting certain
email domain names into the list, you can filter out spam email domains.
But you may have some mail that can be Black Listed coming from a domain
that you don't want to have Black Listed so you'll need to be aware of
that. You can search Google to compile a list of DNS Black List server
names.

Yes...this is a good choice, but...it is a bit of a puzzlement. See,
sometimes making as decision as to who I do or don't want to get messages
from can sometimes be an adventure in itself. I mean like...well..."do I
_really_ like hearing from them that much...are they a *really* good friend,
or..maybe just an aquaintance...???

Sometimes the decision is pretty cut and dried....but....sometimes, it's not
that simple, and there are some gray areas in there...like..."well, yeah, I
really do want to hear from them (whitelist)... or "well, they're not really
someone I want to hear from (blacklist)...but, then...the gray area comes in
...."well...they mean well....and sometimes they are ok....and..I wouldn't
want to hurt their feelings...but...well...I need to just take it a day at a
time...ya know...see what mood I'm in...so I don't want to blacklist them,
but, I don't really want to just get all their mail either." See???

Jan :)
