My WinXp has had blue screen and registry problems lately (not because of
viruses, etc).

I bought a Vista Basic Upgrade.

Now I am wondering if I install the Vista upgrade will the WinXp problems be
passed on to the new Vista installation?

Do I need to get full version of Vista basic and do a clean install?

I have oem WinXP that came with my Dell.

I would suggest you find out why your Windows XP has "problems" and fix that
before you either upgrade OR clean install. If it's bad hardware then Vista
won't be any more stable than XP is whether you upgrade or start over.

Absolutely as Richard says. It wouldn't take long to fix XP. You have to
tell someone precisely what are the problems with XP and we can fix it.
Also you have a big advantage if you have an XP CD because you can always do
a 32 minute repair install booting from the CD.
