Can I use Vista upgrade over faulty WinXP?

My WinXp has had blue screen and registry problems lately (not because of
viruses, etc).

I bought a Vista Basic Upgrade.

Now I am wondering if I install the Vista upgrade will the WinXp problems be
passed on to the new Vista installation?

Do I need to get full version of Vista basic and do a clean install?

Hi,

It depends on the reason for your blue screens. If they are from faulty
hardware, then upgrading will resolve nothing. You need to determine the
cause before you bother upgrading or doing a clean install.

If your hardware is hosed, then going to Vista isn't going to fix your
hardware. If it's driver issues, then you better be sure there are Vista
drivers available for your hardware prior to installing Vista. The only
thing I'd try to ascertain in XP is: is my hardware fried? If so, fix the
hardware. If not, as stated, ensure there are Vista drivers
available -before- diving into the deep end of the Vista Upgrade pool.

Well, I wouldn't do a strict upgrade. You can achieve a clean install with
an upgrade copy by booting from the disk, when you get to the prompt for a
product key don't enter a key but press next. Then, choose the version of
Vista you purchased. When it finishes installing, run the upgrade from there
using the key you purchased.

Or alternatively, you could re-install XP and upgrade that. That wouldn't
give you a clean install, but it would give you a pretty clean slate to work
with.
