Can I use the upgrade version of windows XP

the I have an old Micron pc that I'm trying to upgrade as win 98 is acting up
and I don't want to reinstall the old os. The win 98 cd is the original cd
but it is not a backup like dell. I have the full book with original cert.
of authenticity. It says for distribution with a new pc only. I began the
install process and put in the win 98 cd to verify but did not get a
confirmation and it just went into the partition deletion screen as I want to
do a clean install. I went no further given the instructions. Can I use it
or do I have to go with the full much more expensive version?

Yes, you can use the Upgrade version of WinXP, provided that old PC
will support WinXP.

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Windows Catalog:
(http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many
models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's
consumer-class Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K
before it, is quite sensitive to borderline defective or substandard
hardware (particularly motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will
still support Win9x.

If the CD says for install on a new computer only, you will have to format
the drive and lose everything. You cannot use it to upgrade while saving
all files.

My version of Windows 98 came with a Micron computer. I later "updated" to
Windows 98SE using the Update CD Microsoft offered. Later I upgraded to
Windows XP using the Upgrade CD. Recently I reinstalled Windows XP onto a
freshly formatted NTFS hard drive and when it asked for verification that I
had a previous Windows OS, I used the Windows 98 CD that came with my Micron
computer. This last computer had several replacement parts including the
motherboard, power supply and case. All is running fine.
