There are two ways you can send faxes with your computer.
The first involves using an Internet fax service. You send the fax text
to the service in the form you want to send it together with a list of
recipients. The service will send it for you over telephone company
lines to the recipient. This is a fee-for-service arrangement. You will
have to set up an account with them.
The second involves installing a dial-up fax/modem. This is connected to
a telephone company line in the same way as a telephone voice set. In
many cases, the fax/modem can connect using a filter to the same
physical line as the ADSL service. These filters are available from many
electronics suppliers (Radio Shack, &c). Many ADSL providers will give
you one if asked.
I use option 2. In fact, my local and long distance phone service uses
the same Telco line as my ADSL service.
