Can I Use Existing Case to Upgrade the Motheboard?

I currently have an Gateway Athlon Select 700. I would like to replace
the motherboard and processor, but keep the existing mid-tower case. Is
this possible? Its a Jabil AMD Motherboard R4. What if any are the
limitations on the motherboard/processor combo I can install in this
case?

Thanks for any help,
Oscar

As long as the motherboard is the right form factor and has the appropriate
dimensions for the case, then you should definitely be able to reuse the
case. Keeping this in mind, the limitations are purely on which motherboard
you choose. A new motherboard will be able to support a newer CPU,
peripherals, etc.

One additional note, make sure that the power supply is also sufficient for
you newer motherboard, CPU, and peripherals. Some of the newer chips can
take more power and also have more stringent cooling requirements.

Good luck!

That would be the big sticker for me. If the system is more than 18
months old, chances are the PS might be too weak for a leading or
trailing edge processor and video card. You can buy some reasonably
priced cases that have decent enough power supplies in them, such as
those from Antec. I'd ditch the case and buy a new one. The Gateway
or Dell or whatever it is might also have non-standard connections of
the case LEDs and switches to the mobo.

Get a new case too. Then you got the older case/mobo/cpu intact to
use as a second machine at some point.
