can I use Business Upgrade with my XP Prof media without itinstalled?

Can I use my Upgrade to Vista Business with my XP Prof media (CD) without
having to actually install XP first? I will be purchasing a new 120GB
Drive for my laptop, since I don't have 15GB free space left, but I don't
really want to install XP on the new drive if the CD can be checked during
the Vista Upgrade.

TIA.

Vista doesn't check shiny media for compliance. The upgrade is started from
the qualifying OS desktop for x86 XP to x86 Vista. That said, this just
came to light on how to do an install without having the qualifying OS
installed. I can't vouch for it.

I don't think the Microsoft site will tell him how to install using the "Upgrade" key. He should try it and see if it works.

It's interesting that they did this, and it's a shame that I can't just
put my XP Prof CD in as a means to validate the Upgrade process - I don't
really want to unstall twice, once will take long enough.

The MS site does not detail the actual question/answer - they talk about
using the "Easy Xfer" method, which appears to require that XP be already
installed, which seems stupid as heck.

I was going to upgrade to Vista to play around with it - as it came in the
Action Pack, but, it really seems like they are making it hard for people
that want to represent MS.

I just got my action pack today, installed in a clean VM, skipped the
key and then once Vista was installed I entered my Action Pack provided
key, activation succeeded.

I haven't tested yet, but it's possible that Microsoft decided to not
jerk action pack subscribers around and gave us full keys (with an
"upgrade-only" license in paper)

I'm fine with that, all my machines have OEM licenses anyway, and my VMs
have fully licensed 98 or 2000 installs and action pack upgrades from
there, so in paper I'm fine, but I have little desire to install a 2000
upgrade, mount the 98 ISO, sleep for 3 hours all just to start a Vista
install.
