Can I shoot Microsoft?

Lynn

This is the second time I'm posting this, because,
apparently, you should not click "OK" when it's telling
you that your post is posting! (Can Microsoft make
things any harder if they tried?)

Anyway, I'm now developing a bare-bones, long-winded web
site, because it's close to impossible to make a web page
using Front Page unless you are a programmer!

Definition of long-winded: only one page on this Web
Site, but 35 bookmarks. Look at the started web site I'm
making, to get an idea.
http://www.geocities.com/lynnpetroski/index.html

Now, even though I orginally bookmarked the whole thing
and hyperlinked them all on the Table of Contents, when
it was uploaded none of the bookmarks/hyperlinks worked.
I'm now starting over, and am trying to hyperlink all my
bookmarks, HOWEVER half the time, "Hyperlink" can't be
clicked. It's greyed out, like an option not available
for that task, but it IS the task I want to do. It
didn't let me do Chapter 1 and 2 for a while, then
suddenly let me do them, but now it won't let me do
Chapter 6.

How do I get the blasted thing to work each time?

Lynn

Your site must be popular as Geocities says you are overlimit and won't
display it.

Hi Lynn -- I may be able to offer a little feeble support, being somewhat of
a "newbie" myself.

Question #1: What version of Frontpage are you using?

Question #2: Are you hosting this on a "free" geocities site, rather than
at your own domain? (I'm assuming you are, given the URL you have
listed. -- Note that geocities free accounts do not support Frontpage
extensions as far as my research shows-- though I could be wrong about
that -- and some feature require Frontpage Extensions at the server side in
order to work.)

Question #3: Does the web work OK when you use "Preview" mode in Frontpage
(the tab at the bottom left) or when you preview in the browser on your own
machine? (If it does, it's probably a server problem -- see question #2
above)

Question #4: How did you upload the site -- using Frontpage Publish Web or
via FTP?

Question #5: Have you published any other webs successfully to this or any
other site, using your current Frontpage Application? (I just had to do a
"detect and repair" -- located on the help menu -- on my program yesterday
to
remove some weird behavior my program was showing -- borders showing up
strangely, etc. -- the detect and repair fixed the problem.)

Finally, two bits of advice:
1. I agree with Jesse Hand -- a good tutorial is worth a thousand posts:
Try this one,
http://www.thekjs.essex.sch.uk/yates/Documents/FrontPage2000.doc on
Frontpage, and a very good web-site about basic HTML here:
http://www.thekjs.essex.sch.uk/yates/Documents/FrontPage2000.doc

2. Second bit of advice: From your own website -- "Let all bitterness,
and wrath, and anger, and clamor, and evil speaking, be put away from you,
with all malice: Ephesians 4:29-31" I've found I have had good and
generous help from folks at this web-site, but approaching with a humble
tone of calmly requesting help (no matter how frustrated I am) is generally
more productive for me. :-)

Good luck on your project and hope you have all the support, heavenly and
otherwise, that you need. If you respond to my questions, I'll check in and
write back.

Getting Started
http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/geo/frontpage/index.html
Because FrontPage 2002 server extensions work only with domain-based web sites, FrontPage
publishing via HTTP is no longer supported for GeoCities Plus and GeoCities free services. Only
Yahoo! GeoCities Pro currently supports FrontPage 2002.

You can still publish pages generated by FrontPage 2002 to your web site by using FTP or Easy
Upload, or you can upgrade to a domain-based service to enjoy all of FrontPage 2002's great
features. GeoCities Pro and all three Web Hosting packages -- Business Starter, Business
Starter, and Business Professional -- include FrontPage 2002 support for collaborative web site
authoring and other web publishing features.

(OK, my first post DID post. Sorry about that. LOL)

Things I didn't mention that apparently I should have:
1.) I'm using FrontPage 2000
2.) I uploaded it using Geocities "Easy Upload," which,
shockingly is fairly easy, even for a newbie like me!
3.) I know more about Einstein's Theory of Relativity
(formula only!) then I know about HTML, so HTML Editor
might as well be written in Aramaic. Also, you're gonna
have to write to me like I know very little, welll,
because I know very little. LOL
4.) "Does the web work OK when you use "Preview" mode in
Frontpage(the tab at the bottom left) or when you preview
in the browser on your own machine? ..." Yes, to the
ones I fixed, but no to the ones it won't let me fix.
(It does send me to the bookmarks for Chapters 1-5, but
not Chapter 6, and I gave up at Chapter 6.)
5.) "Question #5: Have you published any other webs
successfully to this or any other site, using your
current Frontpage Application?" Nope. Usually end up
giving up trying to get the blasted web site up after 4-6
months of running back and forth to message board trying
to get help! Thankfully, I've also usually tried to get
a web site up on AOL, which is even harder then
Microsoft, and I've finally left that service. No!
Wait! Long ago I did finally upload (albeit not
perfectly) a web site using FrontPage97, on GeoCities.
Still there somewhere, since a cousin found my old e-mail
address on that web site. :)

And..." 2. Second bit of advice: From your own
website -- "Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger,
and clamor, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with
all malice: Ephesians 4:29-31" I've found I have had
good and generous help from folks at this web-site, but
approaching with a humble tone of calmly requesting help
(no matter how frustrated I am) is generally more
productive for me. :-)"
Whoopise! frustrated with Microsoft, not with anyone on
this message board. Didn't know I was coming off like I
was angry with people on this message board, sorry. Not
meant! (Please note, can't literally shoot Microsoft,
since it is an inanimate, and very big, object. Meant as
humor amid frustrations galore today! LOL)

Jesse,
"FP2002 is quite easy once you play around with it a
little. Oh yeah, you
should read a good tutorial as well......"
Well, I've discovered that "easy" is a relative term. If
you truly enjoy doing something, learning to do it comes
easy. If you don't like doing it, even if the outcome is
something you like, it's not easy. (Good example: I
love eating, but hate cooking, so cooking isn't easy for
me. Same is true with web pages. I like my own web
page, but not thrilled at making one. LOL) Then again,
maybe FP2002 is much easier then 2000!

And, finally, I've just read Yahoos' tutorial on
publishing from FP2000 and don't get it! (Told you I was
lost!)
" How do I publish from FrontPage 2000?
You can still publish to your GeoCities Pro site using
FrontPage 2000.
From within FrontPage 2000, follow these steps:

In the File menu, click on "Publish Web."
In the "Specify the location to publish your web to" box,
type in your URL: http://yourdomain.com
Click on "Options."
Specify whether you want to publish only pages that have
changed or all pages.
Click on "Publish."

1.) What is my "location to publish your web to"?
2.) Which do I want to specify "only pages that have
changed or all pages?"
You'd think with that few directions, I'd be able to
figure it out!

And then again, publishing it wasn't the problem,
publishing it with intact hyperlinks/bookmarks is my
problem (unless it is the same problem?!)

Still completely lost, but hoping I've given enough info
to help you guys to help me. LOL

Lynn

Lynn,
You are trying to publish to GeoCities Free Server which dos not support FrontPage Extensions.

FrontPage publishing via HTTP is no longer supported for GeoCities Plus and GeoCities free
services.

If you want FrontPage Extension support you have to pay for " GeoCities Pro"

http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/geo/frontpage/frontpage-21.html
Read below:
------------------------------------
Which GeoCities package offers FrontPage support?
Yahoo! has upgraded to FrontPage 2002 in order to increase convenience, speed, and security for
web site creation and maintenance.

Upload, or you can upgrade to a domain-based service to enjoy all of FrontPage 2002's great

authoring and other web publishing features.

Clipped

And I would not pay for GeoCities Pro... there are plenty of low costs hosts
out there.

Tom,
"It will greyout all the menu items that require the FP
extensions, allowing you to develop an Apache or whatever
oriented collection of pages."
I'm guessing Apache is another .html, but not sure. Does
this also ask that I *know* which type of .html I'm
using? (I don't know anything about .html passed it's a
whole bunch of programming like typing.)

Lynn

Apache is a web server

..html is a file extensions, and you will have to manually rename your files,
as FP will only create files with .htm extensions. However only your home
page would need .html extension if required by your host, all other page can
be .htm.

you should publish your web using FrontPage. if you need to use an isp
other than yahoo then so be it.
work on your pages with FrontPage and keep all your pictures and pages
within that local web. then as you make changes click file/ publish and
publish your web to the server and all your problems will be alleviated.
you may want to make sure you get on a windows server with current and well
maintained FrontPage extensions and that will prevent other future problems.
there are good hosts and bad ones regardless of the operating system they
use. you may want to ask or search for some good ones.

HTH

I have just looked at your page.
You have set up several links to bookmarks, but there are no bookmarks set
up. (Actually, there is one named Content, but nothing links to it).
To set up a bookmark:
With the page open in FrontPage go to the text you want to link to, and
highlight the first word. Then from the menu choose Insert Bookmark (you
may have to expand the dropdown menu to see this option)
The dialogue that opens will show all the existing bookmarks on the page,
and will allow you to change the name of this new one to something more
meaningful.
Click OK.
The word you highlighted will now be underlined (with a dashed line).
Now you can set up a link to this bookmark.
Repeat for all the other bookmarks and links.
If you have already done this - I cannot think of any reason why the
bookmarks should disappear from the page. The method used to upload has no
bearing on this at all.

There are several other problems with your page, but they can be dealt with
later.

In my opinion, Geocities is doing you a major disservice, and you should
move from there as soon as possible. Geocities plasters your page with its
own advertising, and then loads a pop-under window that is worded to
resemble a Microsoft security warning (though it does state
"advertisement").
Clicking anywhere on this window causes the browser to change to full screen
and start downloading an unwanted program. For me, Geocities and any
website hosted there is a place to avoid.

See below for further comments.

"Apache is a web server"
Ah, man, I hate showing how naive I am (LOL),
however, "web server" like AOL is a web server, or MSN is
a web server, or something else?
A Web Server is a program that runs on a computer. It serves web pages in
the same way that a bartender serves drinks (though usually with less
spillage).
AOL and MSN are ISPs (Internet Service Provider) and Content Providers.
They allow you to connect to the Internet, and provide some Content to look
at from their Web Servers.
"..html is a file extensions, and you will have to
manually rename your files, as FP will only create files
with .htm extensions. However only your home page would
need .html extension if required by your host, all other
page can be .htm.

I don't know if this is what you mean, but when
uploading, "Easy Upload" (or whatever Yahoo names it)
demanded that I have a file named "index.html" therefore
I named this, now infamous, web page "index.html" and
that was the magical moment that I could actually see my
FP web page on the Internet, albeit hyperlink/bookmark
challeneged. And the only other related files
are .gifs, .jpgs, headers, and the other minor little
files related to uploading an extremely simple web site.
Basically correct.
I'm really sorry to be this incredibly naive about html
(hey, at least I know the "l" in "html" means "language,"
so pretty sure I'm using the term correctly!!!) (If
nothing else, I bet I'm getting some of you to use the
simplest language you've ever had to use to explain this
to someone. With that talent, you can teach first
graders how to work FP and have much less problems then
working with me. LOL)

But, honestly, as naive as I am, since this
hyperlink/bookmark problem happens strictly in FP, thus
just showing it doesn't automatically get fixed by
uploading it, isn't it more of a FP problem then an
uploading problem? Isn't something inheritantly wrong
with that particular function ("Insert hyperlink"),
rather then how or even if I can upload an FP2000 to a
Geocities web site? It works online as it works on my
computer.

(And, Carol, I'm not ignoring your suggestion of
reloading FrontPage, but having problems finding that old
disk and hubby swears that old disk no longer works,
since Microsoft created their disks to only work but so
often to prevent piracy. My luck. We have had six (only
three working now) different computers in our house to
load it up on since I bought it, and hubby--someone has
to know how to work computers around here and you *know*
it's not me--is a computer techie so likes to F-disk
about 3-4 times a year per computer. Sure makes it less
likely the disk will work right. LOL)
The disc should be OK until it is physically damaged. In my opinion, there
is no need to reformat PCs more often than once a year - my office has
several running Win95 on a 24/7 basis that have not been touched since
summer 1998. (apart from ScanDisc and Defragment).
