I'm looking for something similar to Shift+Ctrl+Click in Excel, i.e.
something that would allow me to select a rather large area of controls
without having to select them individually? And using Ctrl+A and unselecting
takes too long, too.

Anybody know the secret?

you can also click (and drag) in a horizontal or vertical ruler --
everything that your imaginary line (rectangle) touches will be selected ;)

SHIFT-CLICK on any object to add it to or remove it from the selection

press down the mouse button and drag around the controls - you will see a square, rectangle shape forming.....let go of the mouse button and all controls will have small squares on them to show they are selected. You can then move them by simply hovering the mouse over them then pressing down on the mouse and dragging.
