can i run two hard drives with win xp so that it appears
as one drive, instead of having a master and slave setup.
i would like to have more hard disk space running under a
single drive.

You can with a RAID controller (e.g. RAID 0). But, why is having two drives
a problem?

With XP Pro you can span the drives into a single volume, or do a raid 0 striped set to also get a single volume and some performance boost. I'm not sure if you can do either of the above to your system drive.

You can span the volume but I would not do it. Had bad experience with
another OS. Second hard drive failed and I was never able to rebuild the
volume.

It is possible - but you are then at risk if either mechanism fails.
UNless there is serious good reason (mainly on server systems where
there is also a lot of additional redundancy and duplication) leave
these ideas alone

Again I wouldn't do this for a system drive, but if you run applications that need a lot of fast disk access (video editing and streaming come to mind), then strped raid sets are an inexpensive way to speed things up. The risk is still there but acceptable
