The Ultimate Upgrade would be about the same price and be alot cheaper
than MS upgrade.

That would depend on the policy of the store where you purchased Vista from,
and if you have already installed and activated your operating system.

No it doesn't. Microsoft has a satisfaction guarantee on all their
software. He can return it to Microsoft for a refund and then go buy the
other version.

Skip the upgrade if you can wait for the refund. You want the full version.
No matter what, upgrades are always more work than not upgrades.

Thanks for the response.

I would still do a clean install rather than upgrading XP.

Will that still work.

Yes, but they have a 45-day limit.

If 9 months from now, I decide I want a refund, I can take the
software back (opened or not) to Costco and I'll get a full refund.

Every retailer is different.

Yes, within 45 days. Didn't know Costco takes back opened software. That's
where I got my copy of Vista from.

With a receipt, Costco takes back *anything* you bought there, any
time, used/opened or otherwise and gives you a full refund.

Frankly it's amazing if you ask me. In the case of software they
might as well put up a big sign saying "Get free software here" (as
there is not much from preventing a person from copying the software
before returning it).

Of course in the case of Microsoft and activation I don't know how far
one would get.

But still, it's bizarre. I mentioned it to a clerk there recently and
he smiled and said: "Company policy, what can I say?"
