I worked on a powerpoint presentation that I received as an attachment to an
email without saving it properly to a separate file. It seemed to be saved to
a temporary file but now that I have closed the attachedment I cant find the
saved version that had all the changes. Can I retrieve it or are temporary
files lost forever?

When you finished working on the presentation what did you do? By default you should have been asked if you wanted to save your changes.

I opened the attachment, forgot that it was only an attachment, worked on it
(for ages) saving with the simple save icon (not the 'save as' feature), it
swirled round and supposedly saved but when I closed the attachment and then
reopened it all my changes were gone. Where could it have gone to?

When you opened it again and all the changes had disappeared. did you open it form the same attachment as you did originally? Or did you open it from the MRU list under File Open?

Karen,
Try this...
Open the attachment again and select File | Save As...
It will open up the dialog in the same folder that the file was opened from.
Check for other files with similar names, one of them will be your earlier
presentation. Usually the attachments are opened in the temp file and
retained if a Save operation was performed on it.

Recently I had a similar episode happen to me. Check your temporary internet
files. With Internet Explorer open go to tools, internet options, in browsing
history go to settings, view files and then sort by date or file type. Once
found, right click and drag a copy to your desktop. It should open up fine
from there. Good luck!
