can I retrieve deleted history files?

While I was out today my wife accidentally deleted the history file of
visited web sites in IE 6.0

I use this to keep track of sites I'd like to visit again, so is there
any way to retrieve this information? Is it stored anywhere else on the
hard drive?

Alternatively, is there any way I can prevent this from happening
again? A delete history lock-out? A why to write this info safely
somewhere else?
