Can I put a mATX moboin a standard ATX case?

What sort ot problems am I likely to encounter if I put a mATX mobo
(which I've already bought) in a standard atx case?
Too damn hard to find a good mATX case. The case I have already is not
going to work with the mobo and I'm sick of fighting it.

Yes. Usually. Probably. More than likely. In most cases.
 
Normally a computer case that can handle an ATX motherboard can handle
a MATX motherboard. These two form factors are compatible. The MATX
form factor is designed to use the same mounting points, only less
screws. As a side point, Via has made some Mini-ITX form factor
motherboards and they will also fit to the same mounting holes.

I had no trouble putting an Asus A7V8X-MX uATX mobo in a standard ATX
Case.

Everything lined up and worked first time.

Usually yes, but modern mATX boards often are full-width, use all three
(horizontal) columns of mounting holes. This requires a case of enough
depth or slightly wider so the 5.25" bays sit beside the board.

Look at the new case and see if there's clearance between the 3rd column
of studs and the drive bays, and if the rear I/O shield is removable if it
doesn't match the port layout of the motherboard.
