Can I open a PPS file with another program?

I do not have a PowerPoint software (or the Viewer) installed on my laptop,
and occasionally I receive an email with a .pps file attached. I know I can
open the attachment with a PowerPoint Viewer. I was just wondering if that
is the only software I can use to open the file. Is there another software
that does the same as the Viewer?
 
Since Microsoft offers the viewer at no cost, you probably won't find much
competition.

Why to you need an alternate?
 
As you know, the free Viewer will do the trick.

Open Office's presentation program, Impress, will also open PPT files. I
don't know if it will open PPTX files or not.
