Can I make Installshield think my OS is XP ?

Hello, I have a GIS software package that is distributed as an Installshield
executable. It will not load on my clean install because it says that my OS
is too old. I am assuming it does not recognize the Vista OS designation. I
have run the software without problems on an upgrade but unfortunately, I did
this clean install not forseeing this problem.

I'm wondering if someone could please help provide a solution to this
problem. I was hoping there might be a Registry key change that I could make
temporarily such as when IE7 beta had to spoof sites into thinking it was IE6.

Thanks
Justin

Justin;
Did you try Compatibility Mode:
Right click the executable
Click Properties
Click Compatibility tab

Otherwise contact the software manufacturer and ask about Vista
compatibility.

Yes, thank you Jupe. Unfortunately, I think Installshield is looking for a
reg key so the comp mode doesn't really do the trick. Any other ideas?

Right click the executable, click "Run as Administrator" and put it your
password,
that might work.

Hi Warren,

Thank you for your response. However, I'm not quite sure where you are going
with the elevated privilege approach. The block on the installation is not
UAC it's InstallShield. Can you please elaborate on your solution?

Thanks

It's very remote, but are you running Vista Beta 2 x64? And if so, are you
attempting to install an application that uses a 16-bit installer? That
will not work.

Just a thought, probably not, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

Justin--

This is weak, nopn-specific help for this problem rather than the usual
"take charge do this badda bing you're fixed" type that some people can
provide here, but you did not say who makes the GPS and they often have
different tweaks, and sometimes they are reg tweaks, for example:

http://support.esri.com/index.cfm?fa=knowledgebase.techarticles.gateway&p=43&pf=536

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=GIS+software+registry+key+for+vista+install

http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/

so if I were you, I'd do a little search engining with some key words and
your GPS.
Also you never know what you'll find on the IE Team blog that could be
helpful or still another trick, google your key words and "msdn blog vista"
because so many people at MFST are trying software, hdw, games in different
settings in Vista, you could strike some paydirt there.

Good luck,

CH

Use Sysinternals REGMON application to determine which registry key it's
looking for, add it, see if that helps it.

If its a MSI embedded in the installer, you can use ORCA to 'edit' the MSI.

I have done this before, sometimes the setup.exe will extract to temp then
run a new setup.
