My (second hand) HP Pavillion is giving a lot of problems. I Used the HP
System recovery but I still have problems. These don't come with disks but a
hidden harddrive partition:
A CD rom (slave?) drive doesn't work.
It is slow to shut down.
Norton can't finish its updates
etc.
My laptop works fine. I don't suppose I can use my laptop copy of XP on this
machine and install exactly the same software?

I thought you said the CD drive doesn't work. Now you are saying you want to
install XP. How do you plan to do THAT?

No. You'll have to purchase another copy of Windows XP.

If System Recovery did not solve your HP's problems, a new install of XP may
not, either.
Question about your laptop OS:
Did you buy it separately, or did the manufacturer provide it?
If you bought it separately, and it has been more than 120 days since you
activated the softwareon the laptop, then you should be able to install it
on the Pavillion with no activation problems.

If the software came with the laptop, chances are it's customized for the
laptop hardware, so you'd be setting yourself up for a whole new bunch of
problems. And that's if it would even install. There's a good chance it
would just look at the computer, and just say "no." Worst case is that it
would install and then refuse to work. I've seen that happen.

If it's a separate copy of XP, if it's exactly the same type -- home or pro,
oem; then it will probably work to do a repair install and work with your
key. If it's a different version, it's going to cause some sort of problem.

And, if you've already done a complete restore with the software that was
supposed to work with that computer and that didn;t solve the problems,
chances are you're looking at hardware issues anyway, and nothing you do
with the software is going to fix that.

This one has a CD Rom (drive E) and DVD CDR drive E. The CD Rom drive
doesn't detect a CD Rom "please insert a disk in drive E" after I have put
one in and clicked the icon.

Your second hand HP needs attention.. you appear to have two optical drives
using the same drive letter.. it may not be up to running XP even..

Have you been to the HP website for driver updates and fixes, or to see if
XP is supported at all for the model type.. has it ever worked properly with
XP installed?..
