Can I install different language versions of WORD in one OS?

That's not the way to have multiple languages. You need to run All Programs,
MS Office, MS Office Tools, Microsoft Office 2003 Language Settings and add
the additional languages that you want. You will need the language extension
pack if you are adding a language that is not native to your version (which
depends on which country you live).

I have never tried, but my gut instincts tell me that you end up with a
terrible mess. I don't really know.

Thanks for confirming what I thought may happen. I could imagine some very
conflicting dlls which would be a nightmare to resolve.

I suppose the only other alternative would be to try Virtual PC: at least
you could then delete the version that gets screwed up!

Virtual PC, or VMWare, works very well. I do this all the time. Didn't want
to suggest it, as it's not an easy thing to describe to someone who's never
encountered it, before.

Prior to that, I used separate boot partitions, or separate, "plug-in"
hard-drives.

You can, however, put different languages into one
instance of Word, all at the same time. See
Microsoft's support fo the how-tos; I can't find it
right now. My acquaintances routinely ran English with
Japanese, Oz English, and UK English, for instance.
 
Not without the foreign language pack.

The MUI packs work really well, too. But they are meant for large corporations and only work with the English enterprise edition,

Unfortunately, though, the translations aren't accurate enough (not the same as the local language version) for making screen shots
when writing books or articles...

Sure you can. No foreign language pack required. Doesn't
mean you can run spell check, though, if you haven't
installed and activated the languages. But remember that
most versions of Word these days come with three or four
languages...
