Somewhere in the middle of my document, I have something
that says "Version 2.0". Can I somehow link my footer to
that so that if I change it to "Version 3.0" in the body
of the document, it will automatically update the footer?

Thanks!
Eliezer

You can do this with a cross-reference (REF field) if you bookmark the text
or with a StyleRef field if you apply a specific style (it can be a
character style) to the text.

No problem: You just have to insert a bookmark around the initial text
("version 2.0"). To do this select the text, click Insert -> Bookmark
and give the bookmark a name. Then go to the footer and click Insert
-> Field. In the Field name box on the left select Ref, and in the
Bookmark name box on the right select the name of the bookmark you
created.

Fredrik, thanks for your reply. When I go to the footer
to insert the bookmark, REF is not an option on the left
side - and I can do nothing to find the name of my
bookmark anywhere...

Thanks again,
Eliezer

Type:
Ref "myBookmarkName"
Select what you just typed.
Press Ctrl-F9 to create a field and then F9 update it.

If you've already inserted the bookmark and want to insert a cross-reference
to it, use Insert | Reference | Cross-reference, select Bookmark, then your
bookmark and the appropriate text to display (probably "Bookmark text").

Charles,

That *does* work - hooray/thanks! - but it doesn't update
automatically. Is there a way to do that?

Thanks,
Eliezer

Thank you very much Suzanne - but it doesn't automatically
update itself. Is there a way to do that?

Eliezer

If in a footer, it should update when you print or use print preview.
