Can I have 3 monitors with my laptop?

I only recently realised that you can have two monitors with a laptop!
What a life saver: I just can't work with one screen!

Erm... I'm getting greedy: is there any chance of getting 3 screens!
I can't see why not.
Having multiple screens as far as I can see doesn't have any extra load
on the CPU.

Is there a splitting device for the monitor?
Or maybe a USB solution?

Thanks.

Although why someone would want multiple screens with a laptop is beyond
me. I'm certainly not likely to pack three monitors into my laptop bag
and take them with me and there seems to be little reason for putting up
with the limitations of a laptop if it isn't at least portable.

Well, that's because you're thinking of the laptop in traditional
terms. You wouldn't lug the monitors around, anymore than you'd lug
around the laser printer, the scanner, or for that matter, drag a mile
of cable for secure access to the local closed network.

Some people use their laptops as workstation or desktop alternatives.
While it might seem a bit overkill, it's possible to rig up a desk so
that it has a monitor bank and access to peripheral hardware
(printers, scanners, secure wired networking, etc). The desk becomes
just a big, fancy docking station for the laptop that you can plug
into and have access to all that stuff when you're not on the go. You
also have access to a stripped down version of the same machine by
unplugging it when you want the portability.

Wrong. You are limited to two monitors with a laptop. The video card and
it's driver have to be able to manage the monitors.
