Lately every piece of software I install seems to add a
program that is launched automatically when I create a
dial-up connection. They all check for updates to their
product and tell me about it. I want to get rid of these.
They slow down my computer, pop up windows, and use up my
limited dial-up network bandwidth.

Does anyone know how they gain control when a dial-up
connection is created? Is there a registry key concerning
this?

Peter;
Software like that is usually installed and the settings approved by
the user, although sometimes sneaky tactics are used.

Check the applications themselves.
Usually there is an option within to select whether you want them to
check for updates.
These options are often found under "Options" or "Settings"
