Tom

I have WinXP Pro and the disk is a 'standard' hard disk,
volume C:, whose type is 'basic' and file system is NTFS.

I want to create a D drive.

I have tried to use Disk Management tools and 'Diskpart'
to extend the volume but it won't let me.

So am I able to create a D drive or do I have to use
Partition Magic?

Aside from re-formatting the drive, the answer to the bottom line of your
question is, yes.

LOL, JAX

You can't create more space than what's on the disk, if that's what you mean
by "extend". So unless you have some free space that hasn't been used for
the current partition, the only thing you're going to be able to do, even
with Partition Magic or a similar program, is to shrink your existing
partition and then make a new partition in the leftover space.

OK so can I shrink my C: drive and create a partition
without using Partition Magic.

In other words can I use XP Pros tools to create a D:
drive.

If you just want to use XP, you'd have to format the drive, thus losing
everything, and create that partitions you want before you load Windows.

To shrink an existing partition, you'll need Partition Magic or something
similar.
