I got from HP a vista 32 DVD to upgrade XP32. I want to install Vista64 not
vista32. Is there any way to get it exchanged to vista64?
Thanks.

or he could just order the 64-bit media from Microsoft and use his key since
the keys work for both 32 & 64 bit versions of the software :)

The OP has a reinstalled OEM version of Windows Vista.
OEM product keys are not interchangeable with a different
bit operation system. Only "retail" product keys are interchangeable.

Assuming that it's not an HP OEM version...

HP does not offer "retail" versions of Windows operating systems
to end users...only "OEM" versions.

You'll need to contact HP support and ask them.

Chat with an online HP support technician:

Er, yes that's right - which is precisely why the OP could not "just order

Where did you get that info from?

Last I checked OEM keys worked with both 32 & 64.

At least I know that images from the OEM's that use the special BIOS locked
keys do.

I haven't tried with a purchased copy of an OEM DVD as of yet. I'll have to
try that scenario the next time I build someone a system.

If Windows Vista OEM product keys were interchangable, there would be no need
to offer Vista OEM in either 32-bit or 64-bit versions. OEM Vista DVDs only have
32-bit or 64-bit installation capability. Example:

Microsoft Windows Vista 32-Bit Home Premium for System Builders Single Pack DVD - OEM

Microsoft Windows Vista 64-Bit Home Premium for System Builders Single Pack DVD - OEM

You're not very good at this, are you?

Whether or not the key can be used in 32bit or 64bit, or both, isn't
relevant -- Either way, you'd need the correct DVD. Why would Microsoft
ship both 32-bit and 64-bit in the same box if it wasn't needed?

Microsoft does not ship both the 32-bit version and the 64-bit version
of Windows Vista on the same Windows Vista OEM DVD. Only the retail
Windows Vista DVD has both 32-bit and 64-bit installation files.

Only the retail Vista ULTIMATE has both 64 and 32-bit disks.

Other versions requite ordering the disks (+ shipping charges)

Which is why there are separate versions available. There would be
separate versions available whether or not OEM keys are tied to 32bit or
64bit versions, or if keys could be used on either.

I haven't seen anything authoritative that indicates one way or the
other, nor do I have access to an OEM version to test.

the key can be used on either, problem is only one version at a time can be authenticated with ms.
doing the 32 and then trying to upgrade to 64 you get a KEY IN USE message. all it requires is a call to ms to fix it.

Yeah I realize that -- I'm just trying to determine for certain if a
single OEM key is good for an install in 32-bit or 64-bit Vista.

I suspect, although cannot yet prove, that the DVD is different, but
that the keys are interchangeable.

This is a bit different then retail, where you can only get 32-bit and
have to request 64-bit, or Ultimate which comes with both.

It also makes sense, I don't see an OEM waiting around for a 64-bit DVD
to show up in the mail after a customer orders a system.
