I suggest you're going to need to find one.

Those are probably all the same area, the primary partition, normally the C
drive.

You need a disc. You can't format the disk you're running from and logged
on to.

You format a partition, which may or may not occupy all of the disc space;
otherwise, you don't format an "area".

If you've logged on to a Windows install on a C drive via the recovery
console, you can't format the C drive. You have to boot from something
else that doesn't rely on the disc.

Normally, you would boot from the XP Setup CD, select ( perhaps delete and
recreate) a partition, and format. This doesn't involve logging in.

If you don't have a disc, your system may have a recovery partition, and
recovery often starts with formatting. Check the system manual.

You won't be able to install from the Recovery Console. Find someone
who has an XP cd to create a Bart's PE disk for you
http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ , or you can go here
http://www.ubcd4win.com/ and get their version of a PE disk and boot
your computer with it. Once booted with the PE disk try running this
command:

x:\MiniNT\system32\start.exe /run

where x is the drive where the MiniNT folder is located.

If that doesn't work then you will have to buy a set of restore disks
from HP or you will have to shell out to buy a real Windows CD and
license, there isn't much else that can be done to fix your computer.
And by the way, you never even told us if you ran a chkdsk on the drive.

There is still a possibility that you could use the procedure in
KB307545, you can mount the drive in another Windows 2000 or Windows XP
computer, or use a PE disk and:

From the Snapshot folder, copy the following files to the
c:\windows\system32\config\ folder:
• _REGISTRY_USER_.DEFAULT
• _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SECURITY
• _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SOFTWARE
• _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SYSTEM
• _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SAM

The whole purpose of KB307545 is to replace the broken files in the
config folder with the above files, then do a system restore. If you
boot with a PE disk or if you mount your drive in another computer you
can skip all the other steps, just move or delete the broken files in
the config folder and replace them with the above files.
