Can I continue working on my PC while saving a movie?

Saving the clips to a movie takes a long time. Can something go wrong
if I continue to work on other applications while the movie is being
saved?

It shouldn't if your system uses DDR ram. You should be ok with 1 gig - at
least that's what I have
and I multitask without any problems.
 
As long as what you're doing doesn't take up too much memory... as the
rendering is a memory intensive process.

even at worst, you could always restart...
