Can I bring up Microsoft Works Word documents w/ Microsoft Word?

My computer crashed at midnight on 12/31/2007. I had been using Microsoft
Works Word for my documents. When I had the computer repaired, I bought and
installed Microsoft Word. Now I don't seem to be able to bring up my
previous Microsoft Works Word docs. Is there any way I can find/open them
with Microsoft Word? Thanks for reading. Tom in Baltimore.
 
Works has never had Word: only the Works Suite has Word 2002. Are they
definitely Word documents with a .doc extension?

What happened to your computer? Did it have new hard drive?
 
When you had your system "repaired", did you tell the tech that you needed
him to back up and save your files?
