Can I backup XP updates?

I want to completely re-install my laptop afresh and need to know if there is a way of avoiding downloading all the service packs and critical updates AGAIN! Does XP Home store the downloaded install files somewhere in the system folders? can I back them up and re-install?

The installed updates are not in a usable form on the computer.
Use the Windows Update Catalog and the Windows Update Security CD, #1
