Can Get To Some Web Sites via Network, Not Others.

Hi,

I have searched for the correct newsgroup to post this and this is the
closest I can find, please forgive me if I messed up.

We have a home network with two desktop PC's, a laptop (running
wireless) and a wireless HP printer. We are running a new Linksys
router that can handle wired or wireless connections.

We installed this router a few months ago and after using the setup
program on Linksys.com all has been great. The DSL connection is always
on and all machines can use our DSL at the same time. Flawless, until
this weekend.

I was using one of the PC's to access the web and suddenly it was gone.
No internet. The internet light on the router was on, the machines
could see network and print to the wireless printer via the router, but
no internet access at all!

I finally ran the configuration program for the router again at
Linksys' site and all was well. Not sure what went wrong, but doing
setup again got the machines to be able to see the web via the router
agaib.

BUT, I have noticed something very odd. There are few sites I simply
can not access from ANY machine attached to this router and I was able
to before the problems Saturday. Two of note are Yahoo.com and eBay!
When I try to get to those sites from any machine in this network, it
just sits there and never loads the web page. However, when I try to
bring up other sites I use everyday.. BINGO no trouble. I am even able
to get into EVERY ONE of my secure banking sites and credit card sites
without any trouble EXCEPT for AmericanExpress.com.. that hangs also.

The firewall on the router is off (by default) and I have even turned
off every firewall on my PC thinking that was the problem. Nope. None
of the machines on my network can get to these few selected sites, but
all other sites run flawlessly.

SO, I find myself simply unable to visit certain sites for no reason.

Does ANYONE have an idea why my router (which seems to be the problem)
has decided to block access like this?? Makes no sense to me, but I am
LOST ad to another source of the problem or WHY such vanilla sites like
eBay are the ones not coming up.

Thanks!

Hi Jonah,

Thanks, but I have no idea what a "HOSTS" file is. Can you explain
where it is and how to check it?

Thanks!

HOSTS is here C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc.

Should only have localhost pointing to 127.0.0.1.

# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost
