Can desktop icons be visible on command?

Hi,
Is there a way to keep icons from being visible on the desktop, and make
them visible only when you wish to use one of them?

.you can show/hide icons by right clicking on desktop
Click to expand...
point to arrange icons by and check/uncheck show desktop
icons
