Can DDR 400 Ram work on mobos rated for 266/333?

don't mean can it work at 400 speed, but can it work at a lower
speed.
I
For instance, if i install a DDR 400 (PC-3200) speed ram on an ASRock
K7VT2 motherboard or a ECS K7S5A motherboard (both are rated for
DDR-266 ram), will it work at 266 speed?

Would I have to adjust the BIOS setting or something.

The reason i ask is that I want to get a cheap new system but I want
to build it so that i can transfer the ram when i upgrade to 64 bit
computing later on. I've heard that the 64 bit mobos coming out in
2004 will be able to take DDR-400 ram and not lower.

What speed RAM do athlon 64 mobos take currently by the way?

I figure if I get DDR-400 speed ram, a good video card...etc etc.
then I need only change the motherboard and chip when it comes time to
upgrade. The DDR 400 ram will be useable for the 64 bit motherboard.

Thanks.

You can only use 400 speed RAM if the mother board specs allow it.I've
just fitted an,"Asrock" mother board and there are specific warnings
that it will not work with certain CPU speeds and RAM combos.
Mine is the K7S8X. 3.0
so I don't know about yours.
Try the Asus news group as well as it's an Asus re-badged board.
HTH :)
