Can connect to ISP but no IE browsing & no e-mail

This seems to be a common problem but none of the
suggested work arounds seem to work for me.
Running W2K Pro (all latest SP's on) and IE6 (with all
latest SP's).
Recently had to install a new modem and within 2 days
everything went blah!
Using dial up (no broadband here yet!) I can connect to
three different ISPs but cannot use IE6 at all -
everything I try gets "Page cannot be found".
I cannot connect to my e-mail accounts also - running
diagnostics within Outlook tells me there is a problem
with DNS resolution "DNS client service could not contact
any DNS servers".
Strange thing is I can PING sites by IP address but not by
domain name.
Once connected it looks as if I do get a properly
allocated IP address.
Tried all the old tricks /flushdns etc. but to no avail.
Did have a Modem boost software on board but have cleared
it all out now.
Any help much appreciated - starting to tear what's left
of my hair out now.

Check add remove programs for a file called new.net
domains. If it is there then remove it also check
program files and then use the unistall file there, and
remove the folder and reboot your computer.

This may fix your problem

Dealing with Hijackware

These days most of us are recommending HijackThis to identify and assist in
the removal of these bad guys. **Post your files to
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ as described in the first URL above, not
here.**

If you cannot access the page to download HijackThis, use this link:

If you find you need CoolWebSearch Shredder, use this link:
http://216.180.252.218/~spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/cwshredder.zip
(Get a fresh copy of CWS Shredder before each use. It's updated
frequently.)

Update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From now on,
do both daily.

Guys,
Thanks for all your suggestions.
Have used HijackThis and SpyBot and have removed an awful lot of crap
that I hadn't been aware was on there. And I'm quite a techy!
Hosts does not appear to have been touched at all - unless there's
something really clever and nasty that updates it sneakily during
connectivity (attempted!) time.

The bad news is that the problem is still causing me major grief to
the extent that I'm beginning to consider rebuilding the machine from
scratch.

I believe the has to be to be with DNS resolution - is there anyone
out there who understands the full depth of the way that Win2K and IE
handle dns resolution? Is there a way of reinstalling or refreshing
only whatever manages dns resolution?
Thanks,
Dave.

as suggested?

Thanks. I went there and got HijackThis, which immediately located the
"mirar WebBand" that I and another member here have enquired about. I am
currently prepraring to post my HijackThis log to the spywareinfo forum.

Well, happy to report that the Mirar WebBand "toolbar" was eliminated,
through the personal email assistance of a member of the site at

Thanks for the URL. It is now one of my favorites.

YW. Good news & thanks for posting back. Several advisors in such forums
are MS MVPs who also lurk in this NG.

Problem resolved!!!

After a good deal of head scratching and a lot of help from a couple
of highly qualified friends we have finally gotten over this problem.

It may well be that one of the baddies that HiJackThis or SpyBot has
removed (thanks guys, your software is excellent, and much needed in
these days of spyware etc.) originally caused this particular problem,
which appears to be associated with minor corruption somewhere within
the guts of TCP/IP and possibly in RAS.

By uninstalling IIS and TCP/IP, and then re-installing both, the
problem has been resolved.

Many thanks to all for their suggestions.

Dave.
