I have Windows Media Edition 2005, rollup 2. I was able to capture video
from my Canon analog video camera by playing it in ME TV program. I want to
edit this video but in Movie Maker I am unable to either "Import video" (if
it is there, I am unable to find it) or "Capture from video device" (I get
the message "A video capture device was not detected" although it is set up
the same way that it was to capture it in ME.). I have Windows Move Maker
version 5.1 SP 2. My computer is a Sony Vaio desktop that I purchased last
year. Sorry if this question was already answered. I have searched for the
answer but can't find this exact question. Thanks for any help anyone can
provide.

What is the format of the video file?

Maybe the following article will offer some ideas:

Movie Maker 2 - Recorded TV - DVR-MS Files

Thanks John. I read your very thorough article; it was interesting and a lot
to take in. Are you saying that the bottom line for me, as a Media Center
user is to use the MyDVD software and then the Ripper? You mentioned DV Gate
Plus, which I have but I don't have MyDVD. Do I need to purchase that
software in order to accomplish my issue? Also, what is the "green button"?
Thanks again.

Sorry, Lorna I did not write the article...
I only offered it because I thought it may
apply to your situation.

Maybe PapaJohn will jump in with some
answers for you.

The green button was part of a URL to
download DVR-Ripper:

In searching the downloads of the Green
Button site it appears that the tool has a
new name:

DVR 2 WMV
http://thegreenbutton.com/files/15/dvrms/entry112401.aspx

Good luck!

Hi Lorna,

No, my Method 4 can only be used by those with Media Center Editions of
XP... but you can also use one of the other 3 methods. I didn't mean to
imply that you were limited to that method.

Looks like I have a couple links to update on the page.. thanks John

Thank you both for your responses. I am going to try this again. I
appreciate your feedback.

Hi Papa John and John -

Again, thanks to both of you for your feedback. I am still having problems
and hope that you are still up to responding to my questions/issues.

I have tried all 4 Methods posted on your website Papa John and here are my
results:

Method 1:
1. I downloaded DVR2WMV and was able to add a file to convert.
2. PRX file - I don't know where to find this. I searched my drive and
found several .prx files in the DVR 2 WMV folder and one WMSysPr9.prx file in
the Windows folder. Should I copy one of these? And how should it be edited?

Method 2:
1. Xmuxer is kind of expensive and I am reluctant to buy it when I am not
sure this is going to resolve my issues.

The only reason I purchased this particular computer with Media Center last
year was so that I could copy my 8mm tapes to an editor and then DVD. I
can't tell you how many hours I have spent trying to do this over the past
year.

Method 3
1. I loaded AutoDVRconvert but how do I "run the Register Filters.bad file
to register the two filers?"
2. I did download a trial version of TMPGEnc and tried converting a file and
it seemed to be working (slowly) but it ran out of room. Is there a way to
compress the file first or is it only possible to run smaller files? I don't
know how to do any of this.

Method 4
1. I have been able to do the recording in Media Center.
2. I don't own a copy of Sonic's MyDVD but would be willing to buy it if I
know it is going to work for me but...
3. TMPGEnc again which I tried in Method 3 and also the software is costly
but I would buy it if it would really do what I needed it to do.

I also tried using DV Gate Plus as posted on your site and it seemed like it
would work at first - everything seemed to be accepted; it brought up the
converting to mpeg window but it never did anything.

So I hope I have provided enough information to get a little more feedback
from you.

Thanks very much!
Lorna

Hi Lorna,

You've been busy...

about the profiles... PRX files, see my Save Movies > Custom WMV Profiles
page

xmuxer was a free trial for 21 days when I tried it... but yes, if it's
something you would then want to use in the long run, it needed to be
purchased. as a rule of thumb, anything that is good and handles MPEG-2
files needs to pay royalties on the codec and pass the costs along to the
users.

to run the batch (.bat) file fpr AutoDVRconvert, not the bad one.... double
click on it and it'll run by itself

if you run out of space... how much free space do you have? video takes lots
of room so you may need to free up some room or add another hard drive.
Practice and test on really short files... so space isn't an issue, at least
not until you select your final option.

Don't get MyDVD if you don't already have it.... a Media Center computer
usually comes with DVD software.... what is on yours?

the comment about DVDGate software is on my page because another poster
suggested it... I've never tried it.

Hi Papa John,

Well I can't believe it but I think I have actually found something to work
for me! I tried again those instructions using DV Gate Plus that somebody
posted to your site and after playing with it and changing some settings, I
was able to copy my .dvr-ms file to a .mpg file and then from the .mpg to
..avi. From there I was able to bring it into Movie Maker.

Now my only problem is that I want a better editor! Movie Maker doesn't
offer much. Any opinions regarding a good, user-friendly editor software?

Listen, I am so grateful to you (and the "other John") for your time and
input to my questions. I've learned a lot along the way. You guys are the
greatest.

Thank you so much.
Lorna

If I were to move up, I'd probably go to Adobe's Premiere Elements.... they
provide a 30 day full featured trial period.

the only caution is the learning curve, the time needed to become skilled
with it...
