Hello all,

I am having a very strange problem that just appeared. Out of the
blue, IE stopped being able to bring up websites. Anytime I open IE,
I get Page Cannot be Displayed, Cannot Find Server or DNS error.
However, other programs on my machine can access the Internet just
fine.

If I open My Computer, and put an Internet address in the address
field, I can successfully browse the web. I understand that
iexplore.exe and explorer.exe are seperate processes, but why would
one work, but not the other?

I also installed FireFox to see what would happen, but it's behavior
is like IE, it doesn't bring up any web pages.

I booted into safe mode and ran a full virus check and also ran Spybot
S&D, and everything was clean. Also ran a chkdsk /r, and nothing was
found on the hard drive. My computer is XP with SP2.

This is a strange one. Anyone have any clues? Any help is
appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Jan,

Thanks! The 'netsh winsock reset' command worked for me, and IE is back
working like it is supposed to.

Hi Greg :-)

Try the following and see if it helps:

First , also download, install, immediately update, then run these
additional programs

CWShredder:

AdAware SE:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

HijackThis:

If still no joy...

Download, install and run LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

Also, get a copy of WinsockFix Utility
http://www.dfwonline.net/files/WinsockFix.zip
or
WinsockXPFix available at:
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
and
WinsockXP Fix- WinXP
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
Also, with instructions, at
http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/winfix.shtm
also
From LavaSoft- all versions of Windows-
http://digital-solutions.co.uk/lavasoft/whndnfix.zip
also ....
(NOTE: It is reported that in XP SP2, the command netsh winsock reset
will fix this problem without the need for these programs.)

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

I am having a similar problem, I just installed XP with SP2
and right from the start I could get a web page or 2 and
then it quits.

First eliminate any scumware.
See

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

**Post your HijackThis log to

Alternative download pages for Ad-Aware, Spybot, HijackThis and CWShredder
may be found on this page:

If nothing there helps, please post back to this thread.
