Can anyone recommend a Free AntiVirus program now that AVG Free 2011 is
malfunctioning on many (but not all) machines? They do not appear to be
able to fix the update problem and I need up-to-date protection.

Who would you recommend?

Windows XP.

Thanks !

You talking about AVG Free or the paid version?

AVG FREE. The first problem was interfering with e-mail sending - the
workaround was to uninstall and reinstall without e-mail scanning.
The new problem is failure of Update manager, on some machines but not
on others.

I was using Avira, but have switched to MS Essentials on a winxp and a
windows 7 machine. Both work fine and update approx. each day. I believe
you will need to have automatic windows update set, but I always have
anyway.

Perhaps I will try Avast since it is mentioned twice and no problems
were described.

Any other suggestions?

Is Microsoft Security Essentials an AntiVirus alone or is it other
programs as well? In other words, would I have to uninstall ZoneAlarm
or any other program in order to use it?

Anti-virus alone AFAIK.

Micro$oft Security Essential.

Would you trust an anti-virus program produced by the company who wrote
the operating system that needs it?

^1. Please stop snipping attributes.

1. What is AFAIK ?
2. I indeed am wary about using a Microsoft product for security.
3. What does "snipping attributes" mean?

1. What is AFAIK ?

As far as I knew...
2. I indeed am wary about using a Microsoft product for security.

On the bright side, it should operate more efficiently if not more
effectively because both the OS and the anti-virus device are Micro$oft.
3. What does "snipping attributes" mean?

He/She wanted to see names! :)

Seems only logical...
3. What does "snipping attributes" mean?

An attribute is: "babel17 wrote:" indicating who said the quoted
material. Man-wai Chang has the long-standing and annoying bad habit of
snipping (removing) them from replies, so a reader must look back
through the thread to see "who said that."

Uninstalling ZoneAlarm is /always/ a good idea...

On the _brighter_ side, if Microsoft was more efficient and effective,
you might not even need an anti-virus "device."

^1. You did it again. Why are you so stubborn?
