Can anyone identify IE's image handling dll?

Somehow my IE seems to have got damaged. It was working fine but a
few weeks ago it began showing jpeg and gif files with lines and dots
randomly displayed in random colours. Bitmap (bmp) files are not
affected.

This is a serious problem as it affects also the display of icons on
the desktop, presumably some integration between the browser and
windows XP.

The easiest solution is probably to replace the dll that handles
images with a copy from a working computer. Anyone know which dll it
may be?

I can't uninstall IE6 in XP and the updates/security patches haven't
touched the damaged file...

Your Graphic Adapter is rendering the Images.

A long shot but try this.

Clear the IE cache. I.E./Tools/Options/General/Delete files (and delete
offline content.) It's often recommended that the Temporary Internet Files
(folder) be kept at
40-50 MB. Bigger isn't necessarily better.

I have updated the video drivers but the problem continues. I also
cleared IE's temporary files, restarted, etc.

I don't think the problem is video card related because if I save a
jpeg from the web onto the hdd and use acdsee or any other image
viewer it looks ok, if I use MSIE to view the same file I get the
lines and dots all over the image.

If I can't locate the dll responsible for rendering images then the
other option is to find a way to uninstall IE6 from windows XP, to
then reinstall and hope that resolves it.

Any help is appreciated.

Jeremy,
Check your "File Types" via Windows Explorer ....
Select: .gif and .jpg
See if they are correct or did something alter the default?

Also run the DirectX Troubleshooter
Start | Run (type) "dxdiag" (no quotes)
Run the various tests, check the bottom box for any noted problems.

Thanks for the thoughts. Unfortunately the directx troubleshooter
found no problems at all and looking into the explorer file types
there was nothing unusual (they are handled by ACDSee just like they
are on two other PCs that don't have this issue)

I still think it would be best to identify an replace the binary file
responsible for rendering system graphics.

Anyone know which file that is?
