I connected to Broadband only last week and I immediately got loads of
problems. There appears to be a virus in my system but I can't get rid of
it. I use AVG and it shows that there are 5viruses picked up in it's scan
but before I am able to attempt to get rid of them, I get a message telling
me that "A required source is unavailable" and AVG then freezes and I have
to reboot my system. Another problem shows when I start up my system. A
little box shows on my screen stating "Wupdat not found". I bought a program
last week "PC Doorguard" but it seems to be pretty useless as it isn't
picking anything up. Can anyone offer me advice? I am using W ME and Outlook
Express.
thanks

First get rid of Windows Me and get 2000 or XP.
Second look at getting a firewall applaiance such
as watchguard or one of those if you don't want to spend
the money to do that you can buy something like a netgear
switch with a built in firewall. As far as antivirus
software goes it depends who you talk to, I prefer
Symantec or Norton.

You're asking in the wrong place. Microsoft Access(TM) is a database
management program, part of the Office suite; this newsgroup is for
questions about that program, not general computer "access".

That said... you'll need to reinstall AVG or another antivirus
software program. As suggested elsethread, WinME is one of Microsoft's
weaker versions; if you use it you MUST - no options!!! - regularly
contact Microsoft's website and install all the current security
patches.

If your system is thoroughly affected, your only option may be to back
up all your data (but NONE of your programs, you can't tell which
might be infected); reformat your hard disk; reinstall Windows (ME
from your system disk, or better WinXP Pro); reinstall all your
software from the original CD's; and then restore your data.

Also... one suggestion: don't post your real EMail address on
newsgroups. There are SPAM senders and virus "bots" which search the
newsgroups for such addresses in order to send you unwanted stuff.
Most regular newsgroup readers use "antispammed" addresses (see the
headers on this message for one way of doing so).

Isn't that nice of your Broadband vendor to get you connected, but not warn you first
about the importance of having a firewall. This is exactly what a Comcast technician
attempted to do to my PC last year. I told him "whoa there" and got my firewall software
installed first. I hadn't pre-installed this software, because I had purchased a router
with a built-in firewall. However, the Comcast technician wasn't about to deal with a
router. He was just in a hurry to get his part done. Luckily, all of this happened way
before the RPC Interface Buffer Overflow attack started occurring.
