HELP!! Does anyone know how to recover a document that was
saved over? Please let me know so that I don't have to
say goodbye to 3 months of work on a 40 page proposal
because my co-worker began a new proposal in it and saved
his over mine!!!

THANK YOU in advance!

Restoration 2.5.1.4 is pretty good at recovering lost files. I googled a
couple of links for it (in Spanish).

The good news is that the file was not actually deleted or written over when
your colleague zapped it.

The bad news is that the file's disk space was, however, returned to the
Windows free space pool and almost certainly *has* been written over by now.

The good news is that a file recovery service can still recover it.

The bad news is that file recovery services charge mucho $$$$$$$.

In the future, consider:

1. Frequent backups, e.g. to CD or diskette.
2. Backing it up before letting a colleague have access to it.
3. Setting the file so only you can modify it: password, read only,
whatever.
4. If it is a Word document, turning on Track Changes.
5. Exterminating your colleague for saying "yes" when Windows asked if s/he
wanted to obliterate the previous copy.

As I understand file saves, the file will be saved using the same clusters
it used before...if it's now a smaller file the now-unused clusters are made
available, and if it's bigger it uses more.

Best case you get the now-unused clusters, which is some fraction of the
original file. Unfortunately, any part of a Ppt file is the same as no Ppt
file.

FWIW, there ought to be an easier way to flag a file so nobody else can mess
with it.
