I have a PC running Windows XP SP2. This PC has 3 accounts (myself, my wife
and my son) when I install certain software logged in as myself, the icons
also get placed on the other desktop profiles as well. I know sometime
during installation it ask whether it is to be installed for this user only
or any one who logs onto the PC, but what if it doesn't show you that
option?

Thanks in Advance

Only software designed for multi-user operating systems will ask if the
software is for you or for all users. If you are not asked, you'll need to
manually check the location of the program's shortcuts after it's
installed. If the start menu and desktop shortcuts end up in All Users, you
can move them to your folders.

It's really down to the application. I've seen one of three things happen..

1) It askes you which users should have access tho the program or
2) It assumes all users should have access
3) It only installs on the current user.

If you want to change which user gets an icon on the desktop (or on the
startup) try..

Log in as admin
Right click on Start
Select Explore All Users then..

Icons for everyone go in...
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop

or you can choose which users have them by copying/moving the icon to.....
C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name1>\Desktop
C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name2>\Desktop
etc

Say you have a user called Fred. The icons on his desktop will be a
combination those in ..

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop
and
C:\Documents and Settings\Fred\Desktop

Something similar usually works for the startup menu.
