I've got a problem and I need help urgently as I've got a
project deadline that is coming up pronto.

For the past three months I've been working on my product
catalog using powerpoint 2000. Suddenly I'm receiving an
error and am unable to access the data. I receive the
following message: "Powerpoint can't open the type of
file represented by c:\documentes and settings\......."

Is there anyone out there who could offer me a little
guidance and/or support regarding this issue? If
powerpoint was the program that I used to create the
catalog then what in the world would I use now to open it
and what could have caused this problem? Are there any
other programs that I may use in the interm to at least
retrieve all of my hard work or that might grant me
access to the original file. The data is there. Same
size as it was the last time I accessed it. Just seeing
it and not having access to it is killing me. As far as
I'm concerned there MUST be some way to gain access to
this thing.

I should mention that the laptop I was working on when I
first started this project had powerpoint 2003. The
motherboard to that system needs to be replaced so the
data was transfered to a loaner laptop which has ver.
2000. Common sense would tell me that this might be part
of the problem but if that were so, wouldn't I have
encountered problems from the getgo? It's been well over
a month since the computer mishap so I'm still in the
dark as to what to do. I did try opening it in 2003 but
to no avail.

I'm at my wits end and have tried everything and I'm on a
deadline that's up in one week. I've tried to duplicate
the catalog to some degree but with time restrictions I
just will not make it and it's not nearly as nice as the
one I've "lost".

Somebody, Pleaseeeeeee helppppp!!!. Thanks beforehand
for your help with this very frustrating dilemna. :)

Hi "LVN",

which file size does your PowerPoint file have? Does it contain many
pictures?

Often large files cannot be re-opened ("large" depends on the system you are
using, it can mean 30 MB or 130 MB).

Sometimes it is possible to open a copy of the file in OpenOffice (is
available free at www.openoffice.org). Split it up into smaller parts there
and open those in PowerPoint. But expect some re-formatting work (which will
be less than creating the file from scratch, though).

If size caused the problem, please read: "Why are my PowerPoint files so
big? What can I do about it?" http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00062.htm

Kind regards,
Ute

Hi Ute,

Thank you so much for the information. I'll go ahead and
try that and I'll let you know what the outcome is. I
know this system that I am using (loaner) has issues
regarding memory, etc and yes, it is a very large file
with many, many pictures. You've been very helpful even
if this does not work. I'm hopeful that it will
though. :) :)

Remember to keep a backup

or better still

keep adding a version number to your filename

e.g. MyPresentation-v01
MyPresentation-v02
each time you save it
