What is OOBE? I think I have seen them on a 98 machine
but didn't know if it was safe to delete them. I'm just
not sure what it exactly is. I've heard you run check
your activation status in XP by Start > Run, then
type "oobe/msoobe /a".

I've done some searches and only found that OOBE stands
for Out of the Box Experience. What's this?

Greetings --

As you've found, "OOBE" is an acronym for "Out Of the Box
Experience." It's one of those terms that's somewhat hard to explain,
mostly because experienced users consider the term self-explanatory.
Think of it as the folder containing the files and applications that
can greatly influence your "first impressions" of a newly installed
operating system. It's the functions you're most likely to encounter
the first time you boot up a new PC.
