Can All in wonder 9600 support a widescreen monitor? I asked ATI
support this question and they didn't even bother to reply.

Thank you.

Thank you.

If you go to www.ati.com , click the Products and Technologies link at
top , then click the Radeon 9600 link , then click Specifications on the
left. Why depend on somebody else's answer when you can look it up
yourself?

Considering how awkward is is to negotiate the ATI site, sometimes it's
easier to ask.

Yes it can, I'm using a 128 meg AIW 9600XL with a Dell E228WFP Wide
22 inch Flat Panel Monitor. You just set it up in the Catalyst control
center.

Have you been there lately? It is slightly different since it changed
to ati.amd.com, but to tell the truth I never had a problem with it,
even before. It took me about 20 seconds to find what he was looking
for. Anyway, the point I was trying to make was that he could have
found what he was looking for in less time than it took him to ask here,
then wait for a reply. He said he asked ATI tech and they never
responded, so I assumed (maybe wrongly) that he was already at the site
once. To paraphrase somebody else "If you give a man a fish, he has
food for a meal. If you teach him to fish, he has food for a lifetime."
Do you see where I'm going with this?

In most instances, this would be very good thinking.
Do you see where I'm going with this?

Unfortunately, as with most things in life, things are a bit more
complicated.

If the OP follows your advice and goes here:

http://tinyurl.com/ycz4x5

then downloads the latest driver for the AIW 9600, he/she would find
they could not get 1680 X 1050 resolution, a native resolution for a
22" WS display. At least I couldn't with the RTM version of Vista, and
I jumped through a _bunch_ of hoops trying.

Now here's the interesting part, The previous ATI driver, 8.33.0.0,
dated 12/16/06, perfectly displays 1680 X 1050 on the exact same
system.

So the correct answer to the OP's question is:

Yes the AIW 9600 can support a WS monitor (at least a 22"), but only
with the previous driver.

Again, I _strongly_ agree with your above analogy but there are
exceptions to every cliche'. <g>

I've done that. There is no mentioning of widescreen there.

Oh, sorry. This table doesn't answer your question?

2D DISPLAY MODES
Resolutions, colors and maximum refresh rates (Hz) in 256, 65K or 16.7M
colors
Monitor Resolution Hz
640x480
120
800x600 120
1024x768 120
1152x864 120
1280x1024 120
1600x1200 85
1920x1080* 16:9 75
1920x1200 75
1920x1440 75
2048x1536 60

*16:9 aspect ratio monitors are supported on 1920x1080 and 848x480 on
Windows® XP, Windows® 2000 and Windows® ME. The complete list of
resolutions depends on the driver version and operating system. NOTE:
resolutions are limited by the performance of the attached monitor.

Well, there is this fine print at the bottom of the resolution table
:-)
"*16:9 aspect ratio monitors are supported on 1920x1080 and 848x480 on

Thank you. I see that most 19" widescreen monitor have resolution of
1440X900. 1920x1080 doesn't match that.
