Can a winxp printer be made to appear as a program?

One of the tabs in Canon's scangear toolbox requires me browse to the
link that I want to set up as a receipient for the scanner output. This
is OK for applications such as Word, but not for virtual printers such
as a pdf printer. It is not enough for it to have an ip address it must
be capable of being linked through browsing from Canon's program. I
thought of using the MS loopback printer but I can not work out how to
access it through canon's scangear toolbox as it does not show the
printers under the "my network places".

Are there ways of making printers appear as if they are applications?

Any reason you are not using the scangear starter? It supports PDF
directly. That's my solution when I need to fax paper, scan to PDF,
print to virtual fax device.

When I load scangear starter I get a program called scangear MP (in the
top left hand corner). This does not give me the option to print to a
virtual fax device or scan to pdf. It is very limited. It has two tabs
one simple mode the other advanced. It is the program that came with
my machine. In order to get round its limitations I use scangear
toolbox. Am I describing the same program as you see when you load
scangear starter? If so where are the options to output to pdf and to
print to a virtual driver?

I had a look again at Scangear MP and I can see how to output pdfs, but
I can not see an option to print to a virtual printer.

A disadvantage of Scangear MP is that allows very limited file
descriptions. I think it is about 35 characters.
