I pushed the wrong button and initially sent this without any message so here
goes.
I have a DSL connection through a router. A desktop is hard wired to the
router and a laptop is connected wirelessly to the samd router. Both
connections work very well. Is it possible to set up a VPN arrangement so
the 2 computers can communicate with each other???? I have checked the MS
instructions on a VPN and I am not sure that it can be setup. If it can be,
it seems that I will need an IP address for each computer. Will 'ipconfig'
get me the addresses needed or will I get the IP of the router???

Over your private LAN use the static LAN IP of the server to call. Yes, you can use the ipconfig
command.
Over the public internet use the public IP of the router *AND* make sure TCP Port 1723 and GRE
Protocol 47 traffic are forwarded/enabled through the router. The latter is sometimes called "PPTP
Pass Through" or "VPN Pass Through". Check your router users manual or support web pages for help...

Thanks for the help. I got the computers and the router, including the PPTP
pass through, set up as shown in the links, however, I still have a couple of
problems. The first is error 691 which is the lack of a password and domain.
I do not use them in booting the computer but I do use them, as required, on
the internet. The setup steps did not give me the opportunity to put that
type of information in so that it would apply to the VPN. Any suggestions as
to how to get that information to where it will let me connect??? I believe
the second problem to be the Norton Internet Security in both computers is
causing connection problems (error 800 or 678). Those go away and I get the
691 by disabling the NIS, but that really is not a good idea. I set the
router up with an SSID and using WEP encryption there is no indication of any
requirements there. Is there a way to have the NIS and the VPN at the same
time??? I am not sure if the XPHE's firewall will work in place of the NIS,
since I think that NIS disabled it when I installed the NIS and I have not
enabled it.

Thanks for the help. My last post indicated the problems at the time but
after repeating every step at least a 1/2 dozen times and checking every
possible properties option, I finally got through to where it appears to
work. At least it did when I shut the computer down. Thanks again for your
help.
