How do I make the text appear (through custom animation) by having the letter appear when typing it on the keyboard? Is that possible?

There is an entrance animation in PowerPoint versions 2002 (XP) and later
that is called color typewriter. Perhaps this is what you are looking for?

Honestly, I can't figure out what the heck the
color typewriter animation does, or how much
different it is from "wipe" or "appear."
It doesn't do what Tedi wants, it looks like, in any case...

Jeff,
Set it up to enter character at a time and it will do just what the original
poster wants. (You set that up after you set the animation by right clicking
the animation, selecting "Effect Options" and going to the third tab.) it's
not an animation I like using very often, but it does have its (very)
occasional uses.

You're right, I mis-read his question. Thank you for letting me know, Jeff.
Color typewriter is like a triple wipe, fancy but I could live without it.

As far as what you are looking for Tedi, I would recommend inserting a
textbox on the slide. This can be done by clicking on View | Toolbars |
Control Toolbox | Textbox and then draw the Text Box onto the slide.

When in the presentation, you will be able to click on the text box, type
letters and have those letters show on the screen.

Better? :)

Hello,

PowerPoint doesn't provide the functionality (animate specific object when
a certain keystroke is hit) that you are looking for(?).

If you (or anyone else reading this message) think that it's important that
PowerPoint provide this kind of functionality, don't forget to send your
feedback (in YOUR OWN WORDS, please) to Microsoft at:

http://register.microsoft.com/mswish/suggestion.asp

It's VERY important that, for EACH wish, you describe in detail, WHY it is
important TO YOU that your product suggestion be implemented. A good wish
submssion includes WHAT scenario, work-flow, or end-result is blocked by
not having a specific feature, HOW MUCH time and effort ($$$) is spent
working around a specific limitation of the current product, etc. Remember
that Microsoft receives THOUSANDS of product suggestions every day and we
read each one but, in any given product development cycle, there are ONLY
sufficient resources to address the ones that are MOST IMPORTANT to our
customers so take the extra time to state your case as CLEARLY and
COMPLETELY as possible so that we can FEEL YOUR PAIN.

IMPORTANT: Each submission should be a single suggestion (not a list of
suggestions).
