Can a MB onboard IDE controller fail?

I have an older system with an Asus P2b MB and when it has failed. I am
trying to resurrect it to use as a "garage" PC but the bios does not
recongize the HDD or The CD rom's. I have tried different drives and still
nothing. I have tried jumper settings and cable positions and even different
cables. Is the possible that the IDE controller has actually failed? If yes,
could I add a cheap PCI IDE controller to use the system? I would guess if I
cant get to the CD I would have a tough time setting up the machine. Any
thoughts

Yes you can use an IDE card (something may have blown on your board
preventing that, I have a 486 system that cannot run a floppy drive,
no matter what controller I stick into it). If you cannot get the CD
to work, you can preformat the partion on another system, and copy the
OS install files to it.

Yes.

If yes,
could I add a cheap PCI IDE controller to use the system?
Yes.

I would guess if I
cant get to the CD I would have a tough time setting up the machine. Any
thoughts
