Can a drive be mounted upside down?

Does it matter whether the PCB is facing up or down?

Normally not. Unfortunately for you, WD has no proper
formal manual for their drives anymore so you can check there.

According to tech reps at both Maxtor and Western
Digital, it does not matter if the PCB faces up or down or
sideways. The WD techs (and their supervisor) add that
the drives shouldn't be "canted", but that they should
align one of their 6 sides parallel with the ground. Cooling
air flow over the metal surfaces is more important than
orientation.

Thanks all for replying. So far so good with my new system I'm assembling.

The WD250 G PATA requires a huge predelay setting in my BIOS before it
recognizes the drive. Had me worried for a while. I thought the drive was
bad.

That would worry me too. I'd ask WD about it, it isnt normal.

Not saying it has anything to do with how its mounted tho.
