Hi

Having problems once again with good ol windows XP. Whenever I plug my
digital camera in - it used to show up in the control panel under camera
devices. Now for some unknown reason it shows up under removable storage as
if its a hard drive. This may sound picky - but I want it to show under
cameras like it used to - after all it is a camera.

2nd problem is that I have set the computer to prompt me when it detects
this device - so the computer should prompt me as to whether I wanna open
pictures in a folder, view them etc... Now I have checked these settings
and they still remain set to this - yet the PC doesn't prompt me at all.
Why is this??? Seems ridiculous to me

I have a similar problem. Windows XP has never recognized my camera, but I
was able to get around it by going to My Computer where it shows up as a
removable disk (G). A couple of clicks opens the folder of pictures, which I
select and copy to My Pictures. Meanwhile I get error messages ("Found New
Hardware Wizard - Cannot Install .... One of the filter drivers is ...
invalid") I say OK, and continue. ITs a bit awkward, but it works. Recently,
I installed a new version of Photoshop and lost the ability to download
pictures via the removable disk. Photoshop insisted on downloading and
organizing pictures for me, which is a real drag because it is so much
slower. I was able to stop Photoshop from doing this, but lost the "removable
disk" - so couldn't read my camera or compactflash reader. In frustration I
uninstalled Photoshop and the removable disk returned. However, now that I'm
into trying to solve this problem, I too have become PICKY - its a camera, so
why shouldn't XP recognize it as such!??

In this process I've learned how to check the Device Manager, and explored
the Scanner and Camera Installation Wizard. I've tried downloading a driver
from the Nikon website (camera is a Coolpix 995) and that failed because
"either the driver is incompatible or is not required". The camera
installation wizard shows Coolpix 700, 900 and 950, but not 995. So, Nikon
thinks I have the driver for my camera, and XP only recognizes it as a
generic removable disk. I want to fix this - and then maybe I'll re-visit the
Photoshop issues! Any suggestions would be appreciated.
