Yikes! I've tried everything. I have a Minolta Dimage Z6 video camera that
takes video clips. None of my video players will play them. What am I doing
wrong? I have tried to change settings in the video part of the camera and
it doesn't seem to matter. I reset the camera to the default and I don't get
it.
Also, why won't Movie Maker or any other player for that matter, not play a
file that is a .mov file?

You're not doing anything wrong. MOV is Apple Quicktime's proprietary
format. Quite commonly used for the video format in digital cameras.
Somewhat surprising that it wasn't installed with your camera software, but
it is a free download.

When installing it just be careful because Quicktime tries to take over as
default player for many different media file types that would normally be
opened by Media Player or other programs.

Thank you so much. Can I convert the MOV format from QT then to a format I
can use with my Movie Maker?

I forgot to ask about those downloads that say they can convert MOV to other
formats. Do they work? and if yes, do I still need to have Quick Time on my
computer?

The conversion programs are all different so you'll just have to test some
to find one that works best for you.

You will need to have the CODECs installed that were used to encode the
video. At least the decoder portion, which Quicktime provides. The .MOV
files from my own camera convert to AVI and play in Media Player just fine
but some movie clips I recieved from other people won't play after
conversion without specific CODECs, that I don't happen to have installed.

RalfG,
You're a genius and a nice person, thank you! I have access to some video
clips I had thought were lost or messed up now. I downloaded something
called Quick Time Alternative. So far it's been excellent and worked fine.
I really did not like QT and hoped I could just download some codecs to solve
the problem but this is working fine and only opening the MOV files. When I
open the other files Media Player opens as usual.
This is just in time for foaling season too! Grrrrrrrrreat!
