Camera Detection & Wizards

I volunteered to help a friend work with Adobe Elements 5. I have no
experience with this digital software, or digital cameras for that matter
(this would be a first for me to connect any digital camera), just a long
history with computers and other programs. I borrowed the camera and its disk
in order to get the program and some images. The first thing I discovered was
that although my USB ports are all working just fine, when I connected the
camera and turned it on (my computer, a PC running WXP, was already on),
nothing happened, although the camera initially seem to indicate a connection
to a PC was being set up. I then used the disk with the camera to load
Elements 5, expecting drivers, etc., as well (if they were missing). That
program itself loaded (just fine it seemed), but there was still no
recognition of the camera when I attached it and turned it on again. When I
went in to the Control Panel, to Scanners and Cameras, I discovered that
there was no pre-set entry for the camera brand and no icon for the camera.
My computer, a ThinkPad Z60t, may be slightly older than this camera, but the
computer itself is still not very old. I had anticipated, for me at least,
that there might be a wizard or two (at least from Microsoft). However,
nothing! The camera is a Leica 'C-Lux 2', with no additional operating
settings for a download (except directions to plug in the camera to a PC,
which my friend does regularly).

So two questions:
1. Should I have expected a Microsoft Wizard (or Wizards) to show up? Some
window (which I see often enough) to let me choose an action? If so, or
whatever, can this sort of wizard or action be located on my computer
somewhere and be activated (if it is not already).
2. If anyone has had my sort of experience with a Leica or any other digital
point-and-shoot, and recognizes this problem, is there something that I'm
doing (or not doing) that might set me straight.

I'm not anxious to have Elements 5 as my 'default' viewer, if that is what
it is doing. Indeed, I'd like to retain access to any pre-loaded or similar
program that exists or I might add. But I cannot find any settings for a
'defult' viewer. So, any advice about whether a 'default' viewer can be set,
or Elements 5 has become a default, is much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

If you connect the camera and go to...My Computer...
is it listed as a drive? If_yes_try right clicking the
drive icon and choose...Explore...this should allow
you to access the photos. (copy/paste...drag/drop)

Also...if you have a media reader...try removing the
memory card from the camera and insert it in the
appropriate slot of the reader. If the AutoPlay screen
does not appear....go to...My Computer and look for
a Removable Disk that corresponds with the slot the
card is in.
