i expected this to just work when I put card into hard drive? It hasn't - do
I need some software to use this feature?

A novice!

You don't need any software, normally when you place the card in the card
reader a window will open giving you the option of opening the folder to see
your photo files and you copy them from there. If this is not happening
there are ways to try to repair. But try what is given below first to see if
your card reader is working.

Try the following.
Connect the card reader to the computer.
Insert the card in the card reader and wait about 10 seconds.
Open My Computer to see the content.
Look under Device with Removable Storage
and double click on the first Removable disk you see to open it.
A window will open and you will see a yellow folder, double click on it to
open it and you will see another yellow folder, double click on it to open
it.
You will now see the list of photo files on your card. Select all of them,
just hold the Ctrl key down and press the letter A. This selects all the
files (highlight in blue).
Look at the menu on the left and click on copy the selected items. A window
will open for you to copy the files in one of your folder or make a new
folder to save them in.

Does the above work?

Susie,

I would check to see what Yves suggested. But I'm not sure weather or
not your card read is a BUILT IN 9 in 1 reader or if its a USB powered reader
like Yves thinks it may be.

If you are using a USB powerd reader... do what Yves said to look for.
But if your computer came witha reader on it... it may be called the "
multi-format card reader " what I will suggest is this.
Place your camera card into the correct slot. Wait a few seconds and
then do the following:

START> OPEN MY COMPUTER> FIND THE ICON FOR YOUR CARD ( it will be in the
removable storage device list, mine for instance is listed as drive ( G )
compact flash) > DOUBLE CLICK THAT TO OPEN IT> OPEN THE FILES YOU SEE AND
YOUR PHOTOS SHOULD DISPLAY.

You will then have to highlight all the photos and then on the left
side, choose " copy the selected ittems" then when it askes where to put
them, make them go to your My Pictures folder. I hope this also helps Susie

Robert thanks - when I open 'my computer' it offers:
1. floppy A which I don't have.
2. dvd (d) which I do have and 3. DVD (E) which I have - then 'Removable'
1. Scanner and Camera Fuji - Yes Ok and 2. Lexmark scanner which I have -
it does not open card readers of which there are 4 (labelled: Ms, CF/MD,
Sd/MMC and Sm -which my card fits into) on hard disk (c). I don't seem to
have a G drive option?

I am still baffled. I am buying the system through the local gov scheme and
there is little info with it and no help in the loaded info/manuals to help
me. Can't seem to ask the right questions to get info needed. i can
access photos using the lead form the camera but this is long winded and I
end up using boots card reader - but I want ot be able to use the same system
here. Thanks for your comments tho.

I'm guessing this reader is installed
in your computer? And not connected
by you to a USB port?

If you go to...My Computer...
do you see any drives listed as:

Removable Disk (E.)
Removable Disk (F.)
Removable Disk (G.)
Removable Disk (H.)
(each one represents a different
slot on your card reader)

If you do not see these drives...
Right click your 'My Computer' icon...
from the menu choose...Properties /
Hardware tab / Device Manager button...
Click the + next to...Disk Drives...

Do you see something like the following:

GENERIC USB Storage-CFC USB Device
GENERIC USB Storage-MSC USB Device
GENERIC USB Storage-SDC USB Device
GENERIC USB Storage-SMC USB Device

If you do not see these drives listed...there
must be a hardware issue. Could be as simple
as a loose plug inside the computer.

You see Sd/MMc and SM. With your card inserted. Double click on Sd/MMc and
SM.
Anything happening?
If a new window opens and it displays a yellow folder icon, double click on
it to open it.

Good grief! The slots are in the
Lexmark Scanner.

I need to read more carefully.
